Kindred Clothing Award (Garment Construction)

This hands-on course teaches garment production and fashion design, while building confidence, creativity, and transferable skills.

Learners work at their own pace, supported by qualified assessors, and leave with a recognised qualification and a portfolio of work they’re proud of.

Introduction

This course prioritises those furthest from learning; young parents; those with mental health challenges; those from a care experienced background; school refusers; school non-attenders; and young people (under 25) with a passion for fashion.

  • SCQF Level 5, worth 30 credits
  • Delivered by industry professionals (CMLP members)
  • Usually delivered over x20 sessions in small cohorts of 5 – 10 learners

Course Content

There are 5 units:

  • Garment Construction 1
    Rudiments of sewing: seams, hems, cuffs, collars + Lounge Top
  • Garment Construction 2
    Rudiments of sewing: zips, buttons, straps, pockets + Dungarees
  • Pattern Drafting
    Drafting a pair of leggings
  • Garment Production
    Mood Board, Costing Sheet + T-Shirt/T-Shirt Dress
  • Showcasing
    Photography + What’s Your Story? + Presentation

Course Requirements

Portfolio
All the things practiced, drawn, designed form part of each learner’s portfolio.

Journal
Learners are required to reflect on their progress by keeping a journal, which is completed at the end of each session.

Presentation
Each learner will give a short presentation at the end of the course giving a brief overview of what they learned from the course.

Entry Requirements

No prior sewing experience necessary.

Must be eager to learn.

Priority is given to individuals furthest away from learning.

Assessment Method

Formative Assessment using direct assessment methods are employed to assess the knowledge and competence of learners. This includes observation and questioning.

There is no exam!

Interview
You will be invited to an interview to learn why you would like to join the course and whether this is the right course for you.

Allocation & Start Date
Assuming all necessary requirements and priorities have been met, a cohort will be put together, and all cohort members will be informed of their start date.
